Hampton Designer Showhouse - A Tribute to Betty Sherrill Designed by Gil Walsh

OUR ROOM- A Tribute to Betty Sherrill

This year’s Hampton Designer Showhouse marks Gil Walsh Interior’s premier appearance at a major American showhouse. The room, a sunny study on the second floor, is a loving tribute to the late Betty Sherrill, the first lady of American #interior #design. As president and CEO of the legendary design firm, McMillen, Inc., Mrs. Sherrill singlehandedly took the hocus pocus out of interior #d├ęcor and refashioned it into a quantifiable business, packaging gracious living, quiet good taste and connoisseurship into a respected, desirous service. It is our hope that this exuberant space, with its charming furnishings, dramatic Brunschwig & Fils fabrics and walls in Mrs. Sherrill’s beloved daffodil yellow, will inspire, delight and further the legacy of high design that truly defined the extraordinary Betty Sherrill.

Since its founding in 2007, Gil Walsh Interiors has quietly become a substantial #design firm, noted not only for exquisitely detailed work, but also the diversity of its projects. From private #residences to country clubs to corporate headquarters to elegant resort hotels, the Gil Walsh touch has brought a unique sense of place to distinguished interiors from coast to coast. With offices in Palm Beach and Martha’s Vineyard, the firm employs cutting edge methods and materials to produce buildouts that transcend trends, allowing occupants of any particular room to feel instantly at home.

The Stryde Collection, designed by Michael Wolk is reminiscent of popular international lounge chairs from the mid-20th-century. Characterized by clean, simple design, Stryde’s interesting angles and mix of wood and upholstery give it a classic style. A gradual tapering seat, streamlined silhouette and solid Black American Walnut legs create the perfect modern lounging experience. Oak and Beech woods are also available for individual modern tastes.

Michael Wolk, a Florida based #designer, is one of America’s leading designers of corporate, #residential and hospitality interiors, as well as #furniture and  #furnishings collections for many of the country’s most prestigious manufacturers.

The Stryde Lounge collection won multiple awards; which include the IIDA/Hospitality Design Product Design Awards Competition.  Stryde also won the competition’s best new lounge seating category, achieving the title – Award of Excellence Winner. Best of Neocon – Peoples Choice Award. Best of Show – HD Las Vegas. And, both the #Interior Design Magazine – Best of the Year Finalist and Good Design Award by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture & Design.

My good friend Russ Post at Sotheby’s, Key Largo recently invited me to come up with some ideas to promote an amazing lot that he has listed in the exclusive Ocean Reef Club in tropical Key Largo.  The property is especially amazing because of it’s unusual  “pie” shape. The lot widens to a sunny southern exposure with over 200 feet on a protected and crystal clear waterway. I always love to splay the wings of my homes whenever possible even on more regular rectangular lots.  The effect  creates multiple views instead of a single more static view… it always surprises me how different a view can be even if it shifts as little as ten or fifteen degrees which is often enough to capture a long water view or often a bridge off in the distance.  Russ and I decided it would be best to sketch up a classic tropical home which immediately brought to mind the work of famed theater designer Oliver Messel who dabbled architectural design in Barbados. So what you see is a classic “Island” inspired home, no more than one room deep in order to bring in the bright Florida sunlight all day long.   These striking images were both created by my very talented son Jeremy Taylor form his own design studio in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn.
