The Washington D.C. interior designer,
Darryl Carter, has pioneered a new American aesthetic that seamlessly mixes
modern elements with traditional design. Carter's decor is defined by
restrained, edited choices, with an emphasis on subtle upholstery and elegant antiques.
The result: spaces that are simultaneously stylish and livable, all of which
have a quality that is sure to stand the test of time.
He believes that home is about individual
lifestyle. Darryl Carter’s work integrates an exacting vocabulary – responsive
to both client and venue. His practice is sensitive to lifestyle, architecture
and setting; recognizing that these must be thoughtfully considered to create
living environments. Design longevity is his hallmark; produced by honoring
classic elements of the past and present.

He may be a minimalist, but don't call his work
modern. Carter's
M.O.: Strip away unnecessary embellishment (loud colors, busy
patterns) to focus attention on a few carefully curated pieces, many of them
antiques with traditional forms and warm patinas. "White makes old things
seem more current," he explains. Of course, there's more to it than that:
"White rooms are more complex than they appear," Carter says, "because
there are no distractions. Every choice becomes critical."

In terms of color, Carter sticks to a mostly
monochromatic palette that allows the antiques and unique objects he finds to
take center stage. Upholstery is mostly washed linens and is casually
comfortable. Pops of black accents are also one of Carter's trademarks.
